fter a month and a half break, the 2016 Maxxis FIM World SuperEnduro Championship revs up for round three in Argentina. Marking the third time in the history of SuperEnduro that the series travels to South America, the GP AMV Seguros of Argentina will be held in the seaside city of Pinamar.
For the first time in its history, Argentina will host a round of SuperEnduro. Mas Eventos - well known in the motorcycle world for organising two EnduroGP events in 2012 and 2013 as well as being one of the organisers of the Dakar for several years - are responsible for organising the event in collaboration with Racing Experiences and the CAMOD (Confederacion Argentina de Motociclismo Deportivo).
The entire Mas Eventos crew are determined to make this round a very attractive and exciting show for the Argentinean crowd. Running in conjunction with the infamous Enduro del Verano Beach Race Panama it will be a hive of enduro activity.
Adding a unique element to the GP AMV Seguros of Argentina, round three will also be an open air arena adding further charm and character to the South American race.
Located in the province of Buenos Aires (more than 350 kms south of the capital), Pinamar is the most popular Argentinean seaside city and has about 26,000 inhabitants. Formerly composed mainly of natural sand dunes, many pine trees were planted to make the city more pleasant and green, hence the etymology of the name "Pin" in the name of the city.
At the top of the Prestige classification, Cody WEBB (USA-KTM) holds a narrow two-point advantage over closest rival Jonny WALKER (GB-KTM) thanks to his victories in Poland and Germany. Looking for his hat trick of wins in the 2015/16 series, the KTM rider knows he's also got to harm his rivals in the point's standings.
With a race victory in Germany, WALKER heads to Argentina determined to turn the tables on WEBB. Knowing that everything is still to play for, WALKER will settle for nothing less than the top step of the podium. Fast and furious in Germany, Colton HAAKER (USA - Husqvarna) secured his debut SuperEnduro podium and looks to improve on that performance in Pinamar.
Taddy BLAZUSIAK (PL - KTM) also seemed to find his rhythm at round two. But unfortunately, a thumb injury (fracture) during training in early February leaves him less than 100 per cent. But we know the strength of character of the six-time world champion, who will not want to give up. WEBB will also have to keep an eye on teammate Taylor ROBERT (USA - KTM), who's become a master of the Ride 100 Per Cent Holeshot.
For his part, Alfredo GOMEZ (ESP - KTM) will continue his rise and could again play spoilsport, likewise Mario ROMAN (ESP - Husqvarna), who was quite at ease in Germany. Ty TREMAINE (USA - KTM) will continue his training at the highest level and try to record a top five result, while Sherco's Dani GIBERT (E) and Kevin ROOKSTOOL (USA) still want to fight inside the top ten. Finally, the French Aurélien ADDESSO (Beta) and Spain's Eloi SALSENCH (Beta) could also make the trip and therefore score valuable points for the rest of the Championship.
In the Under 23 class, Manuel LETTENBICHLER (D - KTM), Luis OLIVEIRA (P - Yamaha), Blake GUTZEIT (RSA - Husqvarna), Gethin HUMPHREYS (GB - Husqvarna), Tim APOLLE (D - Husqvarna) and Mathias MARTINSEN (NOR - KTM) will be participating.
The goal for the German leader will be to continue his dominance of the category and to increase his advantage on his classmates. But the four other European riders won't let him win easily. Especially Blake GUTZEIT who stepped up in Riesa or Luis OLIVEIRA who's very consistent and knows very well the South American countries.
These five Europeans top competitors will be joined by the Chilean prospect of Benjamin HERRERA (TM), winner of the SuperEnduro of Los Andes in 2015, and his compatriot Francisco GUZMAN (KTM). Many young Argentineans will also be there to try to prove they can do something in this sport that attracts more and more young generations.
For this first SuperEnduro Grand Prix in Argentina's history, we should once again see an exciting race where anything can happen.
See you on Saturday evening, February 20th at the open-air arena in Pinamar where SEWC stars promise a show in front of the warmth of the Argentinean public.
