FIM organises dinner debate ‘Exploring Europe: Economic & Social Benefits of Motorcycle Tourism’ in the heart of Europe.
On 15th October 2013, FIM organised a dinner debate in the European Parliament. The dinner was hosted by the Members of Parliament Wim VAN DE CAMP (Netherlands) and Jim HIGGINS (Ireland). Jim HIGGINS is also a member of the Parliament’s Tourism Task Force.
A group composed of representatives from various EU cities, regions, national and European institutions as well as representatives from the motorcycle & tourism industry was assembled by FIM. During the dinner, participants received a clear and rich explanation on the economic and social benefits of motorcycle tourism in Europe by FIM representatives. The German motorcycle touring company, Touratech AG outlined its history and the reasons behind the success of its European-made products. The presentation was given by CEO Jochan Schanz and Head of Sales, Martin Wickert.
Both Members of Parliament underlined the necessity for motorcyclists to make their voice heard by all European institutions. Mr Mathieu HOEBERIGS from the Tourism Policy Unit at the European Commission urged the participants to submit their projects in the field of motorcycle tourism to the European Commission as one of its priorities is to encourage diversification of the tourism offer.
The dinner was followed by a lively debate, focusing on the on-going need for political support and infrastructure development to encourage motorcycle tourism.
FIM and Tourism in Europe - FIM believes that Motorcycling Tourism has an important role to play towards supporting local businesses in Europe’s regions by offering an alternative to the mass tourism industry. This FIM believes to be especially so for the most remote areas of Europe. As a result, FIM has identified Touring as a major pillar for its Vision 2020 strategy.
Today, FIM and its affiliated federations are conducting several projects on motorcycling tourism looking at touring and its economic impact. FIM Europe for instance has already initiated a number of projects which link Touring and Economic impact such as the homologation of Biker friendly hotels along the route and the capacity to book your hotel through FIM Europe’s website or a series of touring maps specially designed for motorcyclists in conjunction with ADAC, Germany's and Europe's largest automobile club.
About FIM - FIM, the “Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme” (International Motorcycling Federation), is the governing body for motorcycle racing, and represents 108 national motorcycle federations across six regional continental unions. FIM runs 50 FIM World Championships and Prizes in five different disciplines and is also engaged in non-sporting activities centred on particular themes: tourism, gatherings and leisure, mobility, transport, road safety, public policy, and the sustainability.
At a political level, FIM is the spokesman for the motorcycling community. Together with its partners, ACEM, FEMA and FIA, FIM contributes to the debate on all motorcycling related topics.
FIM is recognised by European Union Institutions as one of the official representative associations of the motorcycling community and is a regular counterpart to EU officials at the highest level when dealing with technical and regulatory aspects for sport, motorcycling and transport issues.
