This weekend will mark a special moment as the FIM and Amicale Spirit of Speed organise together the first ever FIM Historic Event during the second edition of Estoril Classics in Portugal. This event will include the main categories of classic cars and motorcycles from 11-13 October in Cascais.
Responding to the increasing rise in popularity of Historic events, the FIM is working on a framework to officially recognise these events and to create standardisation of certain aspects, which will be managed by a newly created FIM Historic Events structure.
Since its creation in 2009, L'Amicale Spirit of Speed has grown to be the biggest European club of racing bikes collectors and has become widely renowned for the quality of its presentations at both exhibitions and on the racetracks.
Reinforcing their reputation, Amicale Spirit of Speed will display fifty-five racing machines from 1955 to 2014 - to mark the 70th anniversary of the Grand Prix in style at Estoril. A parade of this exotic machinery will take place on both Saturday and Sunday in the presence of FIM President Jorge Viegas. This will include many famous riders including multiple FIM World Champion Giacomo Agostini who will ride his 1973 MV Agusta 500.
Amicale Spirit of Speed President, Bernard Girardot-Miglierina explained: "Created ten years ago to gather collectors of motorcycles competition from all over Europe, our club is proud today to have participated in the majority of the most beautiful European classical events. Since the creation of the club, we have committed ourselves to having a truthful dialogue about the authenticity of our machines. This in the interest of the fans who must be respected, but also the organisers who can count on a great quality of exhibitions to attract these same spectators.”
“Our members have sincerely believed in this philosophy of truthfulness through our identification knowledgebase launched in 2016. This straight-forward approach allows a simple classification and pedagogical of motorcycles presented in exhibitions and on the racetracks.”
“Seeing the FIM engaged in an identical approach is for us a great pride and a recognition of the interest of preserving the historical character of a true sporting and technical heritage. Estoril Classics will be the first ‘FIM Historic Event’ and our members from all over Europe will be keen to satisfy the organisers and all enthusiasts who will discover this great event. Together let us live our passion."
Adding his own words Jorge Viegas, FIM President said: “The passion for motorcycling doesn’t disappear with age, on the contrary: everybody that was somehow involved in this sport or leisure activity only gets more interested and committed year by year. At the FIM we also feel the same and that’s why we have now created the label of FIM Historic Event to acknowledge the quality of an organisation, by its participants, logistics, etc. The Estoril Classics will be the first example of such a guarantee of quality and we will be there to greet the unforgettable Giacomo Agostini amongst an incredible quantity of other riders with their fantastic Classic bikes.”
