Following a very wet start in Megalopolis, Greece, during the past weekend, the FIM MX3 Motocross World Championship riders are heading up to neighbour Bulgaria for a much drier reception in Troyan.
Championship leader, Pellicari Team’s Julien Bill, will try to keep hold of the red plate against the competition in the likes of UFO Racing team rider Milko Potisek, Fusion Racing KTM’s Michael Staufer or Motoman’s Martin Zerava who were the fastest in Megalopolis qualifying before Sunday’s downpour.
Dmitry Parshin and Marco Maddii will be under everyone’s watch interested to see if they can repeat last week’s podium. Martin Michek and Antti Pyrhonen haven’t yet showed what they’re capable of after only one moto on the season; they will surely want to improve their results in the Bulgarian round. Home riders Nikolay Kumanov, Christian Angelov and Christian Krastev lead the Bulgarian contingent and are certainly up to a good outing on ‘their’ track.
The MSK Troyan has been organising this MX3 round since 2007 although all over the region Motocross has always had a strong tradition. Since the fifties that the inhabitants of the south and north region villages gathered together on the Balkan Mountains separating them to watch Motocross and cross-country races.
Massive crowds on the several thousands assembled at the 2000 meters altitude course to watch the very best of their own and with each village having its own motocross track at some stage around Troyan eight MX tracks were active. In 1960 the name “hill-motocross” had stuck being the events totally controlled by the military forces. According to Bogdan Nikolov, the Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation president this year’s brought some useful improvements to the 1550 meters long track.
Following FIM’s recommendations a second entry line to the pit lane was added to increase security and also new fences on the spectator’s area, all with the support of the City of Troyan and the Bulgarian government who are expecting a big crowd attendance as in previous events.
