Astana Expo FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship Final 5 01/02 April 2017 – Heerenveen, The Netherlands
After the first day of racing in Heerenveen, Dmitry Koltakov takes a ten-point lead into the final meeting of the series on Sunday and looks almost certain to regain the title he first won in 2015. An unbeaten maximum in the qualifying heats took him comfortably through to the later stages where he also took full points to finish with a faultless 21 point total.
Challenger Kononov battled hard dropping his only points to Koltakov and was joined in the semi finals by current champion Dmitry Khomitsevich now destined to surrender his world title for this year.
Franz Zorn and Harald Simon were also qualifiers with Simon looking the better of the two Austrians. However his fortune deserted him in Semi Final 1 when after a slow start he fell whilst chasing the Russian pair and earned a disqualification from Referee Krister Gardell.
Predictably, the final involved the four top Russians and although Kononov briefly took the lead on the first lap Koltakov once again stamped his authority coming from behind and finishing with a clear lead despite the valiant efforts of Kononov to catch him.
The destiny of the 2017 series will be decided on Sunday in Heerenveen where racing starts at 14.00 CET and the top scorers go into the last day of the World Championship season in the order that they seem likely to finish:
1. Dmitry Koltakov 167 points
2. Igor Kononov 157
3. Dmitry Khomitsevich 138
4. Dinar Valeev 120
5. Franky Zorn 95
6. Daniil Ivanov 90
