The second event in the FIM World Touring Challenge takes place from 9th to 12th June for the famous ‘Lés a Lés’ which runs down the Atlantic seaboard of Portugal. Renowned as one of the most popular long-distance events in the World, it has now been added to the prestigious FIM World Touring Challenge roster.
A firm favourite in the ‘Challenge’ schedule, the twenty-first edition of this event attracts two-thousand motorcyclists from all over the World. Participants are drawn to this epic ride to experience great views, roads, heritage and of course, food!
This particular year the event is looking to live up to its billing of being the most ‘coastal’ in its history, as a scenic route hugging the shores of the Atlantic has been plotted for most of its one thousand and two hundred kilometre duration.
With the start line in the Northern region of Felgueiras, the intrepid adventurers will navigate a sweeping route down to Arruda dos Vinhos near Lisbon and then all the way down into the famous Algarve region, finishing up in Lagos. The timing of the event is reckoned to be perfect with Portugal usually receiving warm weather in early June, but not yet into the sometimes-fierce summer heat of this beach holiday destination.
Organised by the Federation of Motorcycling of Portugal the two thousand riders of varied machinery will record between them an incredible two and a half million kilometres of route, plus of course their trips to the start line.
Previously attendees have been treated to vast crowds lining the route and famous Portuguese stars from all sport and film have been involved in the event in some way, including top cyclist Cândido Barbosa, Helena Costa, Vítor Norte and Alexandre da Silva.
The nationalities of the riders included of course many Portuguese and Spanish but also French, Italian, German, English, Irish, Dutch, Belgians, Russians, Ukrainians, Hungarians, Canadians, Chileans, Brazilians and Americans.
