As predicted Russia were the comfortable winners of the Gold Medal in the Team Final in Togliatti scoring maximum points on the second day of racing. It was an all-round team performance and secured the Russians their 34th team gold medal in the history of this competition.
Once again the star individual performer was Ove Ledstrum who was beaten only by the Russians in his first race. His 16 points guided Sweden to the silver medal and his victory over Franz Zorn in Heat 41 finally relegated Austria to third place.
The Czech Republic were unable to improve on their first day’s performance despite a battling 12 points from Antonin Klatovsky but with two disqualifications for brother Jan their chances of repeating last year’s bronze medal place disappeared.
The Germans again disappointed with only veteran Gunter Bauer offering any competition and the Swiss team were restricted by the withdrawal of Martin Glarner so that they were able to add only 6 points to their overnight score. Similarly, Finland missed Antii Aakko who took only two rides and the team finished with only 21 points over the weekend event.
