The Memorandum of Cooperation between the FIM and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was first signed in December 2006. Its purpose is to provide a framework for cooperation and support aimed at reducing the environmental impact of motorcycle events. The collaboration between the FIM and UNEP will continue in order to promote and support the monitoring of environmental programmes in the preparation and staging of FIM events. In addition, the FIM supports UNEP campaigns to promote sustainable behaviour and raise awareness on environmental issues for the benefit of younger generations.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day (WED) celebrations is “Raise your voice, not the sea level”.

In support of the UN designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), WED this year will adopt SIDS as its theme in the broader context of climate change. The objectives are to help build momentum towards the Third International Conference on SIDS in September and encourage a greater understanding of the importance of SIDS and of the urgency of helping to protect the islands in the face of growing risks and vulnerabilities, particularly as a result of climate change.
