French Freestyle rider Rémi Bizouard is the 2008 World Championship of this spectacular discipline of the motorcycling sport. Held as an FIM Series of events since 2006, the FIM Motocross Freestyle World Championship continues an increasing development. This year the title went to a rider who was not really a favorite contender at the beginning of the season, but ended clinching five wins out of nine rounds. Norwegian rider Andre Villa started leading the series but got injured early September during a practice session (broken leg) and was out for the rest of the year. Bizouard simply won the four remaining rounds (Beograd, Cologne and both rounds in Riga) and could declare himself World Champion before even the last round in Fortaleza, Brazil.
We met Rémi Bizouard for a short talk.
- Freestyle is a very peculiar type of sport. A passion for you?
- Yes, absolutely. I had started to ride Motocross and I was fascinated by the jumps, I was interested only in this, and as from 16 years I started to dedicate myself to Freestyle permanently.
- However, you were not exactly considered as the favorite rider for this year’s title. It must have been a surprise.
- Yes, I was not expecting this, at least not at the beginning. It was the first year in which I was running all the World Championship rounds (one win in Graz plus the last four rounds, 2nd on the first day in Graz, 2nd and 3rd in Basel – plus a win in Berlin and one in Hamburg, two non-Championship races). It is a surprise and I am extremely happy about it.
- What do you think about the presence of the FIM in the discipline since 2006? Did it bring something?
- Yes, without any doubt, there is a much better organization, the competitions, mainly the series are now better structured, there are new riders coming up. A good structure helps the sport.
- What are you doing the rest of the time? Practice ?
- Yes, practice, as much as possible. Only practising you can really make progress in Freestyle. Start again and again to jump, try new tricks and figures, various times. I am training at home in Bergerac, near Bordeaux, and in winter a little more down south…
- In your opinion, is there any room left for an evolution of the figures?
- Yes of course, there is much left to do, but it will be evidently more and more difficult. IT represents hours and hours of practice for the same figure, a lot of work.
