Casey Stoner is cautiously optimistic about his FIM MotoGP World Championship title chances next season after seemingly overcoming the fitness woes which blighted his 2009 campaign.
The 2007 world champion was well in the title fight with Fiat Yamaha duo Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo last season before an energy-sapping illness started to affect him in races and ultimately led him to missing three races in an effort to recover.
His comeback at the final four rounds of 2009 delivered two victories and a second place to suggest the Australian was back to his best, and he is optimistic over his chances with the factory Ducati team in 2010.
"I can't be sure I can compete for the championship but I'm going to try," Stoner told www.motorcyclenews.com.
"And now we know we have taken one problem out of the equation.
"In the period I had my biggest problems, our bike was very strong and I had a lot of opportunities but my physical condition prevented us from taking advantage of this.
"But next year now we concentrate on all the other things and hopefully challenge for the championship again."
