Ireland's Eugene Laverty produced a late track record to claim pole for Sunday's FIM Supersport World Championship round in Valencia.
Kawasaki's Joan Lascorz had led for much of the session but Laverty piloted his Parkalgar Honda to a lap time of one minute 35.658 seconds to edge out the Spaniard by 0.082sec.
Turkey's Kenan Sofuoglu claimed third place on his Hannspree Ten Kate Honda, ahead of Lascorz's Japanese team-mate Katsuaki Fujiwara.
Spaniard David Salom, Britain's Chaz Davies - both of the ParkinGO BE1 Triumph team - Frenchman Fabien Foret and Michele Pirro of Italy will start on the second row.
