Stage 5: Sitra - Siwa
Road connection: 1.5 km - Special Stage: 412 km – Road connection: 5.5 km
Total: 419 km
Siwa, the beautiful oasis of Alexander the Great´s history, who encountered the big oracle of Amon´s Temple, the same that confirms that he was direct descendant of Amon, and a true Pharaoh…
The bivouac is next to the lake surrounded by amazing rocks that give an amazing view during the sunset.
This stage before the last one tomorrow was very fast. Marc Coma attacked with his KTM 690 cc and took an advantage of 4´23´´ on the scratch to Chaleco López, and 27´´ overall.
Now second overall, the Chilean rider explains himself. “I couldn´t do anything else. I rolled with Helder Rodrigues all along the stage and full gas, but during a fast section, the “big bikes” had an advantage over the 450 cc bikes. Tomorrow Marc will start first, but it will be very hard to overtake him.”
First or second tomorrow, Marc Coma will become the FIM Cross Country Rally World Championship.
Przygonski was fourth of the day. The Polish offered a great show of jumps in the dunes; he even fell and was photographed while stopped. The young Polish is followed by Helder Rodrigues, Jacek Czachor and Jes Munk , a Danish cross country rally rookie.
“I try to keep my head cold – explains Silkeborg´s – to read the road book and keep the rhythm without making mistakes. I discover cross country rally and I´m captivated by this discipline.”
Less fortune for the young Spanish, Joan Barreda, who rolled the special with Marc Coma, but broke the engine 40 km before the finish. Some other crashes of the stage are Federico Ghitti, who had a clavicle fracture before the refueling and Alex Zanotti, who fell and broke a tooth and complained of shoulder pain…
In quads, Marcos Patronelli was 15th but he keeps an important gap, while Camelia Liparoti is the only woman in this category. Liparoti is 25th of the scratch.
Tonight it´s really hot at Siwa and riders are all working on their road books. In their tents, they all think about tomorrow… the last selective section of 240 km that, after a road connection, the 13th Edition of the FIM Pharaohs Rally will finish in El Alamein in the Mediterranean Sea.
