Over 9,000 spectators braved the -15 degree temperatures in Ufa for the 2012 FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship Final 2, on Saturday, where holder Nikolay Krasnikov continued his pursuit of a record eighth title by winning the Final on the first day of the second round and although the weather may be cold the competition is certainly heating up.
It was an incident packed afternoon with both Krasnikov and current leader Daniil Ivanov suffering disqualifications from Referee Wojciech Grodzki in a meeting which took nearly three hours to complete.
Ivanov’s ejection from his Semi Final was the more damaging as it ruled him out of the Final and lost him a potential 6 points. More worryingly, he sustained serious concussion as a result of being hit by a following rider after he fell and his participation in the second day’s racing will be subject to a medical examination before the meeting.
Dmitri Khomitsevich was beaten by Krasnikov three times during the meeting but improved his overall position with a storming 18 points. Dmitri Koltakov was fourth with 15 points on his home track but was restricted by a hand injury sustained in the semi final crash with Ivanov.
Wild Card Stefan Svensson from Sweden sustained an eye injury when he fell in Heat 19 an is also doubtful for tomorrow’s meeting
Going into tomorrow’s second day, Ivanov holds a slender 2 point lead over Krasnikov with Khomitsevich and Koltakov in close contention.
Leading scorers (all Russian):
• Daniil Ivanov 55 points
• Nicolay Krasnikov 53
• Dmitri Khomitsevich 47
• Dmitr Koltakov 42
