The Russians lead by 8 points from their nearest rivals Austria after the first day of the 2012 FIM Team Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship in Togliatti, Russia. Snow and wind made conditions difficult but in front of a crowd of around 8,000 spectators, the home team scored maximum points in all their heats and will take 30 points into the second day’s racing. Daniil Ivanov top scored with 14 points from 5 rides.
In second place Austria were well served by Harald Simon who gathered 13 points from his 5 completed rides and was supported by reserve Franz Zorn with 9 points. Simon withdrew from his final race through an injury sustained in Heat 17 but is hopeful of being fit to ride tomorrow.
The Klatovsky brothers were in the thick of the action, each picking up 10 points and leaving the Czech Republic with a chance of a medal placing.
