Khomitsevitch ahead on Day 1

17/03/12 - 06:58

Dmitry Khomitsevitch was the winner of a dramatic 1st day of the Assen round on Friday evening in the 2012 FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship Final 3.

He scored 20 points from his 7 rides and was beaten only by Nikolay Krasnikov in his opening ride. He closed the gap on his Russian colleagues and is within 2 points of Daniil Ivanov.

Current champion Krasnikov had looked in control throughout despite his customary poor gating which forced him to come from behind on several occasions. Unbeaten up to the Final he fell on the final lap when in third place and failed to add to his score. Ivanov had been disqualified from Heat 19 by the Referee after he clashed with Krasnikov on the last bend.

There was some excellent racing on a well prepared track and Austrians Franz Zorn and Harald Simon were the best of the non-Russians with ten points each.

Home favourite Rene Stellingwerf excited his fans with some strong riding in Heat 6 to score 2 points but this was his only success in an otherwise disappointing evening for the Dutch rider. That race was won by Poland’s Grzegorz Knapp but he too failed to capitalise on this success and finished the meeting with only 5 points.

Leading Scorers, Day 1:
Dmitri Khomitsevitch (Russia) 20 points
Nicolay Krasnikov (Russia) 18
Daniil Ivanov (Russia) 15
Dmitri Kolkatov (Russia) 15
Harald Simon (Austria) 10
Sergei Kharachintsev (Russia) 10
Eduard Krysov (Russia) 10
Franz Zorn (Austria) 10

Action resumes in Assen on Saturday night at 19.00 local time.
