The Australian outback of Mt Tarrangower provided a challenging course for riders of the 2012 FIM Trial World Championship on day one of the country's first ever World Trial GP. The pressure was on for thirty-year-old Adam Raga - Gas Gas from Spain, who is second in current standings, but started the day just one-championship point ahead of his chasing compatriots Jeroni Fajardo - Beta and Albert Cabestany - Sherco.
Summing up his performance at the end of day one, Raga said: "The sections were very difficult and some of them also dangerous, which is reflected in today's high scores. I didn't start too well, but I recovered a lot towards the end of the day. I was happy to finish in second place and I am looking forward to a better day tomorrow."
Raga totted up fifty-four marks on Saturday, a full thirty marks behind Saturday's winner Toni Bou - Repsol Montesa, but enough to extend his lead over his other rivals.
Raga, who before this week had never been to Australia, was happy to see the country added to the FIM Trial World Championship schedule for the first time this year. He commented: "It is a World Championship so it is important that we should take it all around the World, and Australia is a great country. I have already seen two kangaroos and I am looking forward to seeing more of Australia after the Trial. I would like to come back again."
