Night of the Jumps Sofia 2012

11/12/12 - 12:08

Final showdown – Battle for podiums in FIM FMX World Championship

The curtain will go up on the final showdown of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship in Bulgaria, Saturday 15th December. Twelve freestyle motocrossers from three continents will go head-to-head at the NIGHT of the JUMPs in the Arena Armeec Sofia, as they tussle for the concluding points in this year’s FMX World Championship. The 2012 world championship may have already been decided (Remi Bizouard), but the battle for bronze in particular is hotting up.

Remi Bizouard has an unassailable position at the top of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championship, followed by Podmol in second place on 172 points. The Czech rider’s silver appears to be in the bag and will probably remain there, since third-placed David Rinaldo trails him by 34 points. However, Rinaldo will once again have to perform his toughest tricks in Sofia, including the Doublegrab Backflip, if he is to fend off his main rivals, among them, fellow Frenchman Brice Izzo, who is just seven points behind.

German rider Hannes Ackermann and Maikel Melero from Spain are separated by only 15 points and will be scrapping for fifth place. The German rider extended his lead on the Spaniard in the final run-off in Riga, and the two motocrossers will go at it hammer and tongs in Sofia.

2011 World Champion Javier Villegas (Chile) is well down the field this year and in contention for seventh position but must take 10 points out of Bianconcini (Italy) to pull it off.

For the first time in nearly half a year, Clinton Moore is back on course for the championship and intends going through to the final in Sofia and into the Top Ten by executing The Volt. Red Bull rider Petr Pilat has the same goal in mind and would also like to finish among the Top Ten riders of 2012 in the final run-off.

Josh Sheehan is the second Aussie rider in the Bulgarian Grand Prix aiming to pull off a win in the final competition of the year and come up smelling of roses for 2013. Jose Miralles (Spain) completes the line-up. The Spanish rider must pull out all the stops again to produce a terrific run, featuring a high degree of difficulty, since it has already been confirmed that Dany Torres has been seeded for next year’s NIGHT of the JUMPs / FIM Freestyle MX World Championship.

In any case, spectators in Sofia and at home can look forward to a spectacular showdown. The nine best riders in this year’s FMX World Championship are in the line-up, plus three of the world’s best FMX riders – Sheehan and Moore, the two Australians, and Pilat, the Backflip Combo King.

High drama is also guaranteed in Maxxis Highest Air. Whilst Massimo Bianconcini (Italy) has secured the overall win and the TAG Heuer winner’s watch, Maikel Melero, Libor Podmol and Luc Ackermann, who is only 14-years old, will be disputing the remaining podium places. Luc is the front-runner to take silver. He is currently placed second and only needs one point to be assured of finishing runner-up, but that won’t be easy for the teenager, since this will be his first high jump contest after his bad fall in the World Championship competition in Cologne and he is bound to be nervous. Maikel Melero is currently in third place, one point up on Podmol.
