Women Ride in Guayaquil, Ecuador

12/10/11 - 15:38

FIM Latin America organised its first edition of the Copa Lationoamericana Feminina de Motocross in Guayaquil. As many as 17 women from Honduras, Panama, Puerto Rico and host country Equador showed up for this event that was run on the Circuito Abel Gilbert under very hot temperatures.

The track was a mixture of sand with wet greasy spots which made it very tricky. But the riders managed well and there were some entertaining races. Honduras’ Alexandra Lopez won both heats and put her country in the winners’ circle. By doing so, she created a surprise because it was the first time ever that a native of this country had participated in a Latin American Championship/Cup!

The smiling faces of the female riders showed their satisfaction about having their “own” Cup. The first step has been set and they are already looking out for the next edition.

Last but not least: Puerto Rico’s Karina Carrasquillo who finished third in the Women’s ranks also challenged the boys of the Campeonata Latinoamericana de Motocross 85cc. She was not as successful as in the Women’s class but she had the merit of taking part.

Final standings:

1.  Alendra Lopez (Honduras/Honda/50 points);
2. Jesenya Cuesta (Ecuador/Yamaha/40p);
3. Karina Carrasquillo (Puerto Rico/Honda/40p);
