When the morning rain finally gave way to some bright afternoon sunshine it was Adam Raga – Gas Gas who shone brightly on the opening day of the 2009 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship. As yesterday’s course inspection revealed, the Grand Prix of Ireland presented a tough challenge, where Raga and runner up Toni Bou – Repsol Montesa HRC were simply in a class of their own. Japan’s Takahisa Fujinami – Repsol Montesa HRC eventually stole third spot from Albert Cabestany – Sherco on a most cleans tie break, but they were some twenty marks behind the leading duo.
A delighted Raga enthused. “ Today is a very important victory for me for a few reasons. To win the first day of any championship is always good and especially as it comes after I made such a poor performance in the indoor series this year. I am riding very strong, but so is Toni, so for that reason I am even more happy especially as the sections have been very difficult today. The trial has been good, and is how the World championship should be. Now I am in some pain, as I injured my knee in section two on the first lap. I just hope it will be OK, so I can fight for the win again tomorrow.”
