Cabestany steals second place

15/03/09 - 19:21

It was a thrilling and dramatic end to the battle to determine who would be vice champion in the 2009 SPEA FIM Indoor Trial World Championship. The duel between arch rivals Adam Raga – Gas Gas and Albert Cabestany – Sherco has raged throughout the series, with little to separate these two Spanish compatriots at anytime of the campaign. Whilst Raga has been the most consistent and threatening of the pair in many of the rounds, Cabestany’s win in Marseille (the only rider to defeat Bou this season) and his ability to hold his nerve last night in Madrid eventually gave him the edge.

With both riders showing signs of nerves, neither transferred to the Trial with any kind of conviction. However in the main event, as has been the case all season the Spanish duo remained locked in battle right to the final section of the final round of the championship. A silly error in the last watery hazard would demote Raga to fifth on the night, and with Cabestany doing just enough to take the last podium place, the fierce rivals finished the series tied on twenty-five points apiece. Cruelly for Raga, Cabestany would then steal second place in the final standings by virtue of having gained one round victory compared to none for Adam.
